We share the three best hiking trails in every US state, according to America’s most popular hiking app
The US knows how to do wilderness. Wedged between the two great oceans of the world, it is home to practically every landscape under the sun. Beaches, lakes, mountains, rainforest, deserts, canyons and glaciers all rise and fall across this continent-sized country. And thanks to the outstanding National Park Service, huge swathes of it are readily accessible.
When, in 1872, the US established Yellowstone, its first national park (and the world’s second after Bogd Khan Uul in Mongolia), it signalled the start of something truly special. Yellowstone became a global model for the preservation of biodiversity and cultural history; a model that has been replicated all over the world.
Here at Atlas & Boots, we’re always seeking out the most thrilling hikes, the finest trails and the most diverse landscapes. But, in a country of such extremes, how does one even begin to unearth the best hiking trails in every US state?
Perhaps crowdsourcing is the answer. Home to over 100,000 trails, AllTrails is one of the world’s premier hiking apps. It has over 20 million global users and is extensively downloaded in the US.
Everyone will have an opinion on what constitutes ‘the best’, but with reviews running in the hundreds of thousands, we believe the ‘AllTrails method’ is a feasible way of selecting the best hiking trails in every US state.

30 MOST BEAUTIFUL MOUNTAINS IN THE WORLD The most beautiful mountains in the world have captivated climbers for centuries. Here, we examine their lethal appeal “You are not in the mountains. The mountains are in you,” said John Muir, the renowned naturalist, author and environmental philosopher. If our resident seven-summit hopeful is an apt barometer, Muir makes a valid point. Those who spend time in the mountains seem to be driven by a deeper force. These brave men and women will face vertiginous vertical falls, sub-zero temperatures and 8,000m death zones in pursuit of their summit dreams. It’s in ode to them that we present this list. MOST BEAUTIFUL MOUNTAINS IN THE WORLD 1. CUERNOS DEL PAINE Height: 2,600m (8,530ft) Location: Andes, Chile EMPERORCOSAR/SHUTTERSTOCK The stunning Cuernos del Paine Los Cuernos del Paine or ‘Paine horns’ refer to a set of sharp granite peaks in Torres del Paine National Park, all of which rise above 2,000m. ELEPHANT SAFARI AT UDAWALAWE NATIONAL PARK I wasn’t enamoured with the prospect of camping at Udawalawe National Park in Sri Lanka . I’d had a particularly challenging run-in with a cockroach (a flying cockroach) at a hotel down the road and wasn’t quite ready for more. As usual, Peter employed all his rugged country charm to convince me that ‘it’s safer in a tent’ because ‘there’s an airlock so nothing can get in’. So, despite the fact that I was done with camping , I agreed to do it once more at Udawalawe National Park. My first pleasant surprise came when I realised that the ‘private safari camp’ was exactly that: an experience for just us . There would be no shared commode, no muddy footprints in the shower, no midnight revellers stomping past the tent. It was just me and Peter in our tent and a support team nearby, comprising a driver, a ranger, a personal chef, a waiter and a site manager. Apparently, this is how the other half c...
