We share the three best hiking trails in every US state, according to America’s most popular hiking app
The US knows how to do wilderness. Wedged between the two great oceans of the world, it is home to practically every landscape under the sun. Beaches, lakes, mountains, rainforest, deserts, canyons and glaciers all rise and fall across this continent-sized country. And thanks to the outstanding National Park Service, huge swathes of it are readily accessible.
When, in 1872, the US established Yellowstone, its first national park (and the world’s second after Bogd Khan Uul in Mongolia), it signalled the start of something truly special. Yellowstone became a global model for the preservation of biodiversity and cultural history; a model that has been replicated all over the world.
Here at Atlas & Boots, we’re always seeking out the most thrilling hikes, the finest trails and the most diverse landscapes. But, in a country of such extremes, how does one even begin to unearth the best hiking trails in every US state?
Perhaps crowdsourcing is the answer. Home to over 100,000 trails, AllTrails is one of the world’s premier hiking apps. It has over 20 million global users and is extensively downloaded in the US.
Everyone will have an opinion on what constitutes ‘the best’, but with reviews running in the hundreds of thousands, we believe the ‘AllTrails method’ is a feasible way of selecting the best hiking trails in every US state.

30 MOST BEAUTIFUL MOUNTAINS IN THE WORLD The most beautiful mountains in the world have captivated climbers for centuries. Here, we examine their lethal appeal “You are not in the mountains. The mountains are in you,” said John Muir, the renowned naturalist, author and environmental philosopher. If our resident seven-summit hopeful is an apt barometer, Muir makes a valid point. Those who spend time in the mountains seem to be driven by a deeper force. These brave men and women will face vertiginous vertical falls, sub-zero temperatures and 8,000m death zones in pursuit of their summit dreams. It’s in ode to them that we present this list. 12 MAPS THAT CHANGED OUR WORLD VIEW In ode of this great instrument of adventure, we run through 12 maps that changed our world view There are few things that evoke the romanticism of adventure quite like a map – especially old maps. Full of exotic names (Persia, Abyssinia, Rhodesia!) and olde worlde lettering, they are reminiscent of a time when men sacrificed their lives for adventure and exploration. Maps ignite hopes and inspire dreams. They encourage one to sail away from the safe harbour and, in the words of Mark Twain, to explore, to dream, to discover. MAPS THAT CHANGED OUR WORLD VIEW In ode of this great instrument of adventure, we run through 12 maps that changed our world view starting where else but Greece? 1. ANAXIMANDER WORLD MAP, 6TH CENTURY BC (Image: Public Domain ) First up in our list of maps that changed our world view is the Anaximander world map. Anaximander was a Greek philosopher who lived in the 6th Century BC and was a...
UNKNOWN TREKS: 10 OFF THE BEATEN TRAIL ADVENTURES From remote deserts to polar escapes, these unknown treks will get you far off the beaten trail I spent 10 years living in London, riding the crowded tube to work, fighting for space with those around me and standing in queues at bus stops, supermarkets, anywhere really – I am British after all. Naturally, this inspired daydreams of escaping it all and running off to the wilderness with only my backpack, tent, camping stove and a handful of freeze-dried meals. About twice a year I managed to briefly abscond the confines of London, usually fleeing to the mountains of Norway , Austria or Scotland . Since we launched Atlas & Boots, I’ve discovered plenty of unknown treks across the world, but I still daydream about getting even further off the grid. If you’re like me and yearn for true wilderness, nature and seclusion, these unknown treks will be right up yo...
